The McArthur River mine, in tandem with Key Lake mine, is the world’s largest producer of high-grade uranium. To prevent erosion and the deposition of materials into Boomerang Lake, a rock-lined conveyance channel was designed by the client to transfer treated mine effluent from an upstream dam location to a new precast outfall structure 420 metres downstream at Read Creek. PBN Nuna Contracting Joint Venture, a partnership with Pinehouse Business North Limited Partnership (Pinehouse First Nation), provided construction services under strict environmental monitoring.

A new electrical substation and backup diesel generation plant was constructed to support the ongoing expansion of the mine.
Project Scope
- Supply and installation of a firewater line (pipe installation and civil work encompassing over 800 metres of insulated HDPE 6″ and 8” DR11 pipe)
- Construction of firewater huts (3 small light-gauge steel buildings)
- Fencing and barriers
- Supply and installation of a counterpoise (800 metres of guywire excavated and backfilled)
- Miscellaneous site services, including material-receiving support, site laydown preparation, and carpentry work around camp
