Nuna is the largest Inuit-owned heavy civil construction, earthworks and mine construction contractor in Canada.
Nuna Group of Companies is a heavy civil construction, earthworks and contract mining company with offices in Cambridge Bay, NU; Yellowknife, NT; Edmonton, AB; Vancouver, BC; and Prince Albert SK. The Nuna Group of Companies comprises various companies, ventures, and partnerships.
In addition to construction services, Nuna offers comprehensive training programs. Nuna Training Technologies (NTT) focuses on classroom, simulator, and field-based training activities. NTT is an accredited training facility, and our simulators are popular among our clients for providing custom training programs at their locations.
Nuna’s experienced professionals and construction group are highly knowledgeable and skilled in dealing with the array of challenges associated with working on remote construction and mine development projects that lack supporting infrastructure. Our 26-year track record of safe, successful, large-scale project delivery has enabled us to develop a strategic team that is instrumental in the detailed planning required for success. With our management strength and supporting systems, our capacity allows us to plan and execute concurrent projects in excess of $150M per project.
Our client base consists of several resource companies whose projects span from smaller public and private civil projects to multi-national, full-scale projects. Our workforce at various times exceeds 800 people working on projects in Canada’s remote north. Nuna has a demonstrated commitment to hiring Indigenous and local people who live in the areas where we do business. In our 2018 fiscal year, we achieved an average of 35.55% Indigenous employment across all projects.
Nuna is focused on our commitment to excellence in the execution of our scope of services and Indigenous training and employment.
On November 1, 2018, North American Construction Group Ltd. (NACG) purchased Nuna Logistics Limited’s minority shareholder, 2835878 Canada Inc. This transaction resulted in 923239 N.W.T. Ltd. (100% owned by the Kitikmeot Corporation) maintaining its 51% ownership in Nuna; and North American Construction Group Ltd. securing 49% ownership in Nuna. As part of NACG’s reporting requirements under US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), a new company, Nuna Logistics Partnership (NLP), has been established and will be used moving forward as our new legal entity. Nuna continues to retain it’s 51% Inuit ownership and the majority of Nuna’s board positions held by Kitikmeot Corporation, a wholly owned business arm of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association.
Kitikmeot Corporation (KC) is owned by and is the business arm of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association. KC is entrusted to pursue opportunities that build an economic base for all Inuit in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. Nuna qualifies as a “Northern Company” under the Inuit Impact and Benefits Agreements.
North American Construction Group Ltd. has over 65 years of experience in construction and mining and provides a comprehensive and integrated approach to meet their customer’s requirements from consultation to completion. NACG’s focus on people and relationships and their uncompromising commitment to health and safety are aligned with Nuna’s values and will ensure the continued level of excellence that Nuna’s customers expect. In addition, the access to a larger and significant mobile equipment fleet, experienced site personnel and NACG’s growing external maintenance services create multiple synergies through this mutually beneficial acquisition and enables Nuna to offer services on a much larger scale.
Although Nuna is a project-focused company, we are committed to working with our partners to develop sustainable business opportunities in a safe, profitable, and environmentally conscientious manner.
Our management team and on-site supervisors work closely with our clients to ensure a complete and thorough understanding of their operational objectives and the terms and conditions of the planned work. Our management team monitors project progress daily to ensure that work remains on schedule and budget, and that it meets the client’s objectives. We maintain a high level of consistent communications between all stakeholders, and clients receive detailed project updates regularly.
